A copy of ‘volume 3’ of Voltaire’s Essai sur l’histoire universelle (which was eventually to become the Essai sur les mœurs), heavily modified with dozens of manuscript amendments, given to Jacques Abram Élie Daniel Clavel de Brenles in early 1754. Some of the corrections are written on the page, others are added on bits of paper stuck to the printed pages with wafer seals, and others still are inserted as whole new gatherings running to several pages.
