The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck-and-Seal’ method before sending. The wax seal is partially extant on f.2 and has caused some damage to the same. Two wafer seals are also extant on f.2v. They do not appear to have been used to seal the letter, suggesting instead that their either affixed the letter to another document or were used to attach another sheet of paper to the letter. There is a small hole in the upper right-hand corner of f.1r.
Passed at the American Art Association’s William F. Gable sale in New York on 25 November 1924 (Lot. 1019) and again at the RR Auction sale on 8 December 2021 (Lot. 702) where it passed for $4,109.
