Piguet, Lot 2250, ‘VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet, dit). Lettre signée “le vieux malade des alpes, V.” adressée à M. Pankoucke libraire de Paris, datée du 27 juillet 1768’
Title:
Letter signed from Voltaire to Charles Joseph Panckoucke, written in the hand of Wagnière in Lyon, Versoix, and Ferney and dated 27 July 1768 [D15159]
The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck-and-Seal’ method before sending. The paper was additionally folded to create a left-hand margin on both the recto and verso sides. There is an ink blot in the left-hand margin of f.1r. The letter was sealed using a sealing wafer, extant on f.2r, that has caused some damage to f.2. This damage has been repaired with paper. A stain to the right-hand side of f.2v might indicate the former presence of a pin. There is water damage to the left-hand side of the seal on f.2r.
A mathematical sum has been added in the lower portion of f.2r. Voltaire as signed the letter as ‘le vieux malade des alpes V’. Wagnière has included a postscript after Voltaire’s signature. A Geneva postmark has been stamped above the address on f.2v.
Passed at the Reynart sale in Paris on 28 May 1879 (p.4-5). Passed again at the Piguet sale of Slatkine’s papers in December 2025 (Lot. 2250), with an estimated price of 1,000-1,200 CHF.
