A second hand has endorsed the MS as ‘No.8’ in the upper left-hand corner of p.35. The same hand has also added a bibliographical reference to the bottom of p.35, alongside a provenance note that states that the copy was made by a friend of Maupertuis. A third hand has added footnotes to the bottom of p.35 identifying, and expanding upon, matters mentioned in the letter. These notes are linked to the main text through the use of corresponding symbols. The name ‘Saurin’ on l.4 and the Latin quote on l.8 of p.35 have been underlined.
