A letter signed from Voltaire to Claude Philippe Fyot, marquis de La Marche, written in the hand of Wagnière and dated 4 November 1761 [D10130]
Detailed Summary:
Voltaire begins by saying that his body is sick, but that his soul is well becuase it is full of the recipient. He adds that he does not know where de La Marche is, or if his daughter is with him. He then apologises for the large paquet he sent de La Marche concerning fetishes, and reminds him that the big Corneille is more precious to him than the little President de Brosses. Voltaire reminds de La Marche that he had asked him to let him know if his egraver could undertake a dozen prints, before concluding by saying that de La Marche has awakened his old passion for him and thus implores de La Marche to write to him.
The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck-and-Seal’ method before sending. The wax seal is extant on f.2v and has caused some damage to the same. There are several small holes and tears along the fold lines and a cluster of ink dots in the upper left-hand corner of f.2v. There is a stain to the upper right-hand corner of f.1r and two circular stains along the lower edge of the MS that were caused by wax. Rust marks along the upper edge of f.1v-2r suggest the presence of a metal object between the two leaves at one time.
