The right-hand and bottom edges of the paper have been outlined in black ink, a practice typically used to denote that either the sender or the recipient were in mourning. There is a large ink blot in the upper left-hand corner of p.323.The MS was folded in half vertically (since unfolded).
A second hand has endorsed the MS as ‘No.121*’ in the upper left-hand corner of p.323. The same hand has also noted that the letter is unknown in the lower left-hand corner of p.323. A third hand has also added a provenance note to the lower left-hand corner of p.323.
