The paper is watermarked with a shield bearing a post horn, topped with a crown. Beneath the shield is the name: ‘Vander Ley’.

The letter was sealed before sending. The MS features one horizontal and four vertical fold lines. The seal, extant on f.2v, is atypical for Voltaire, featuring a head rather than the usual shield. It has caused some minor damage to the lower left-hand corner of f.2v. The letter has been folded to create a left-hand margin on both the recto and verso sides. There is a small stain over l.14 on f.1r.
