A signed letter from Cardinal Lazzaro Opizio Pallavicini, Secretary of State of Pius VI, dated 20 June 1778, discussing recent events including the death of Voltaire.
Detailed Summary:
Cardinal Lazzaro Opizio Pallavicini writes that Voltaire died ‘unhappily’ and that his corpse wil be transported to the place of his retirement where, for many years, he ‘let himself be carried away by the license of his unhealthy whim and do great damage to Religion’. He adds that Voltaire also did great harm to his admirers.
The letter features horizontal, vertical, and diagonal foldlines, suggesting that it was letterlocked before sending. There is an area of discolouration along the left-hand margin, and a stain at the top of f.1r.
