The paper is watermarked with an allegorical depiction of the Netherlands. A woman sits in a fenced circle holding a lance topped with a hat. To her left is a lion holding a sword and a bushel of wheat. Text at the top of the watermark reads ‘Pro Patria’. Text beneath the image reads: ‘D&C B[lauw]’.

The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck, Fold, and Seal’ method. The wax seal is extant on f.2v and has caused some damage to the same. Ink from the facing page has transferred onto f.2r.
Voltaire has added a postscript to the end of the letter on f.1v in his own hand. There is a minor correction to the first word of l.2 on f.1r in the form of corrected text being written over the top of incorrect text.
