The paper is watermarked with an allegorical depiction of the Netherlands. A woman sits in a fenced circle holding a lance topped with a hat. To her left is a lion holding a sword and a bushel of wheat. Text at the top of the watermark reads ‘Pro Patria’. Text beneath the image reads: ‘D&C B[lauw]’.

The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck-and-Seal’ method. The wax seal is extant on f.2v and has caused some damage to the same. Ink from the facing page has transferred onto f.2r.
Voltaire has added a postscript to the end of the letter on f.1v in his own hand. There is a minor correction to the first word of l.2 on f.1r in the form of corrected text being written over the top of incorrect text.
