Additional Comments:

The MS was folded to create a left-hand margin on both the recto and verso sides. The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck-and-Seal’ method before sending. A wafer seal was used to secure the letter, stamped with Voltaire’s coat of arms. It is extant on f.2 and has caused some damage to both folios upon opening. Some of the text sparkles due to pounce being absorbed into the ink.

Undecorated

Additions:

Five postmarks have been stamped over the address panel on f.2v. Several words and passages have been underlined throughout. There is a minor correction to the final line of f.1v in the form of corrected text being written over the top of incorrect text. A provenance note in a second, unknown hand reading: ‘réponse de mr de Voltaire’ has been added to the upper right-hand corner of f.1r and subsequently crossed out. The MS is endorsed as ’24’ in the upper left-hand corner of f.1r.
