Corrected copy of ‘Mémoires pour servir à la vie de Monsieur de Voltaire’, written in the hands of Wagnière and Voltaire, undated.
Detailed Summary:
The MS was composed, according to a notes in Voltaire’s hand on f.79v, f.81r, f.95v, and f.98r, between 6 November 1759 and 12 February 1760. The notes states that the MS was composed at Les Délices. F.1-80 are written primarily in Wagnière’s hand with corrections by Voltaire. F.81-99 are written primarily in Voltaire’s hand. The first half seems to be a clean copy of the text. The second half appears to be a working document.
The original paper covers have been bound into the volume. They are torn and have been repaired with tape. The upper portion of f.55 has been cut away. Five fragments of sealing wafers at the bottom of f.54v correspond to fragments on f.55r, suggesting that the remaining portion of the folio was once affixed to the previous page, covering four lines of text and replacing them with the six lines found on f.55v. There is minor staining throughout, as well as several minor ink blots and splatters. There is a larger ink blot in the left-hand margin of f.27r and in the upper left-hand corner of f.60r.
Select words and phrases have been underlined throughout, including extensive underlining on f.51r. Voltaire has made minor corrections throughout in the form of crossings out with corrected text added superscript, crossings out, and additional text being added superscript. Additional text has also been added to the margins, such as on f.21v.Two further hands have endorsed the MS as ‘Mémoires de Voltaire’ and ‘Original précieux des Mémoires de Voltaire par lui mesme’ on the flyleaves and original paper covers respectively. A marginal note has been added to the margin of f.14r. It is linked to the main text through the use of a corresponding symbol. Voltaire has also added an ‘NB’ in the lower left-hand corner of f.88v.
