Autograph draft of a letter from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to Voltaire, written from Montmorency and dating to 18 August 1756.
Detailed Summary:
The draft is incomplete and represents just one part of Rousseau’s much longer ‘Lettre sur la providence’. The symbol at the beginning of the draft suggests that this manuscript may have been an addendum that was to be inserted into the final draft of the letter.
There is a minor correction to l.1 of f.1r in the form of a crossing out with corrected text added superscript. A symbol has been added to the start of the draft. Amélie Streckeisen-Moultou, the great-grandaughter of Paul Moultou, has added a provenance note to the bottom of f.1r that certifies that the manuscript is in Rousseau’s hand.
