The letter was turned 45 degrees before the corners were folded in to leave a rectangular address panel. The was seal used to seal the letter is partially extant and has caused some damage to the MS. There is an ink blot on l.7 of f.1r.

The address panel has been added in a secretarial hand. The letter is addressed not to Voltaire, but instead to Caroline Louise Baden-Durlach, margravine of Baden-Durlach [née von Hessen-Darmstadt] herself. There are numerous crossings out throughout, with corrected text being added superscript.
