This MS copy of Samson is the first item in a recueil, entitled ‘Supplément aux œuvres de théâtre de M. de Voltaire’ that also contains manuscript copies of Eriphile and Adélaïde Du Guesclin. This is presumably the recueil that Voltaire sent to the marquis d’Argenson around June 1739.

A later note (after 1765) on the verso of the fly-page of the ‘Supplément’ begins: ‘Ce Supplément contient Samson que Rameau a voulu mettre en musique; mais qu’il n’a jamais achevé. Par consequent cette pièce n’a jamais été jouée; elle est imprimée dans les Œuvres de Voltaire, mais avec des différences très considérables et avec un acte entier transposé et changé’. Two further hands have added corrections to the MS, the first in brown ink and the second in black ink.
