Detailed Summary:
The marquise de Pompadour begins by saying that she allowed Voltaire to dedicate Tancrede to her because she had known him for 25 years and had not found anything reprehensible in the text. In a postscript, she adds that the lines she emphasised in Voltaire’s text were not the ones that he sent to her. She suggests that these lines be suppressed from the print edition, not because they are bad, but because they remind people of crimes that are too fatal and too shameful to the nation.
