Autograph letter signed from Voltaire to Jacques-Abram-Elie-Daniel Clavel de Brenles, written from Prangins and dated 18 [February 1755].
Detailed Summary:
The letter was found within a copy of Voltaire’s Essai sur l’histoire universelle, tome troisième : contenant les temps depuis Charles VII roi de France jusqu’à l’empereur Charlesquint (Leipzig & Dresden, 1754), housed at the BCU Lausanne (1D 110 Armoire 46). This book contains numerous additions in a secretarial hand, themselves corrected by Voltaire, which were written on separate slips of paper and affixed to the book.
The MS was sealed using the ‘Tuck, Fold, and Seal’ method before sending. The wax seal is no longer extant on f.2v but has caused some damage to the same. The upper left-hand corner of f.1r has been dog-eared and there are two pin holes in the left-hand margin of f.1r. The final letter of the penultimate line of f.1r is slightly smudged.
There is a minor corrections in the form of a crossing out with the addition of corrected text superscript on l.15 of f.1r, and a second minor correction in the form of corrected text being written over the top of incorrect text on the penultimate line of f.1v. Voltaire has added two marginal notes to the left-hand margin of f.1r justifying matters mentioned in the body of the letter. These notes are linked to the main text through the use of corresponding symbols. A second hand has added a provenance note beside the signature reading ‘autographe par Voltaire’.
