A presentation copy of Voltaire’s La Pucelle d’Orleans, written in the hand of Wagnière. The poem dates to 1737, but the paper is watermarked with the date 1742 meaning that this copy was made in this year or later.
Detailed Summary:
This copy of La Pucelle d’Orleans contains 15 cantos.
Notes in Voltaire’s hand expanding on, or elucidating, the text have been added throughout. A list of corrections and/or additions to be made to this version of La Pucelle d’Orleans has been loosely inserted into the MS in the hand of Guillaume-Chrétien de Lamoignon de Malesherbes. A list of variations, totalling nine 8vo pages, in the hand of Bauffre (Malesherbes’ secretary) has also been loosely inserted, as has a portrait of Voltaire. A note on the flyleaf, in the hand of Villenace, states that the MS is in the hand of Wagnière and that the MS only contains 15 cantos, the fifteenth of which is unfinished. This note has been signed by Mathieu Guillaume Thérèse Villenave.
