Autograph letter from Voltaire to Laurent-François Prault, dated 28 June [1738].
Detailed Summary:
Voltaire asks that Prault follows his instructions exactly, and adds that Mr Woodman of London should be informed that the book will only sell if it is corrected. Voltaire then discusses various writings sent to him by Prault, asking that he not be listed as the author of three epistles that have been attributed to him, and insisting that Mr de la Roque and Mr Abbé Provost are employed as publishers. He then asks for a copies of various works, adding that Émilie du Châtelet would send her own list of requests in due course. Voltaire ends by discussing an erronous correction he had made to his Eléments de la philosophie de Newton, and asks that this be retracted.

The MS is bound with other letters in the collection in calf.
Additional Comments:
There are minor ink blots throughout. With the exception of the first line, f.22 appears to have been written at a different time to f.21 as the hand, whilst still Voltaire’s, is smaller.

There are minor corrections on f.22 in the form of crossing out and the addition of corrected text superscript. Select phrases have been underlined on f.22. An additional section has been added to the conclusion of the letter, and is joined to the letter by the use of a corresponding symbol that has been drawn in the left-hand margin of f.21v. A small note has been added to the end of the letter on f.22v likely by Prault, reading: ‘perd la moitié de son mouvement après avoir parcouru trois de ses Diamètres.’
