you shou’d take a Copy of it. Sir, In September last a Gentleman near Bristol shew’d me a letter, wch he had rece’d from ye Revd: Mr Fletcher at Paris.
Autograph letter signed from John Wesley to Miss Sparrow, dated 14 January 1779
Detailed Summary:
The letter to Miss Sparrow of Jan. 14, 1779, first passes on an anecdote that Fletcher told about Voltaire, then goes on to present Wesley’s scathing views on the French writer and his successes.
The letter consists of one sheet of paper, bifolium. Each folio features two additional horizontal and vertical fold lines. There are a number of small holes along these fold lines. The letter was sealed with red wax. The seal is extant on f.2v and has damaged the right-hand side of f.1r. There is also a small tear to the lower left-hand margin of f.2r. There is a large ink stain along f.2v and a significant area of discolouration along the right-hand side of the same that suggests the letter had once been glued into a collection of papers.
