From 1755, La Pucelle circulated clandestinely in the form of pirate editions and manuscript copies, before it was published in 1762. This is a manuscript copy of the text, illustrated with images that seem to have been copied from one of the clandestine copies.
The MS is bound in porphyry calf with an ornate smooth back. The title piece is of red morocco. There are triple gilded net frames with filded fleurons in the corners, and gilded edges. This is a contemporary binding that has been restored.

The manuscript is illustrated with 18 plates, one at the head of each canto, seemingly copied from a clandestine copy. These illustrations were drawn in brown ink and coloured in gouache and watercolour. The text, calligraphed in brown and red ink, is framed by a double red net. The frontispiece is illustrated, including a portrait of Voltaire. There is a vignette at the head and large culs-de-lampe drawn with stencil ink wash, except for the last one drawn in ink and enhanced with pink wash.
