Detailed Summary:

Voltaire asks Jean Thévenin if they are at least on the same footing as the chamberlains of other kings, admitting that whilst they are comrades he poorly educated about the rights of their offices. He asks if it is required to support the sovereign through their personal decency and modesty, and implores Thévenin to honour him with an answer.

The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck, Fold, and Seal’ method. The wax seal is extant on f.2v and has caused some damage to the same.

Part of the address has been crossed out on f.2v. Postage marks have been added over the top of the address on the same. The number ‘8’ has been drawn over the top of what appears to be the letter ‘M’ in the second line of the date on f.1r.
