Letter signed from Voltaire to Jacques de Rochefort d’Ally, chevalier de Rochefort d’Ally, written in the hand of Wagnière from Ferney and dated 22 December 1766. The letter is accompanied by 41 further letters from Voltaire to d’Ally and his wife dating from 1766 to 1778, many of which are in the hand of Wagnière. One of these is in Voltaire’s hand and dates to 18 April 1774, and another is in the hand of Madame Denis.

Voltaire begins by saying that Jacques de Rochefort d’Ally, chevalier de Rochefort d’Ally will kiss a priest’s slipper and will be kissed by laymen who love him with all their hearts. He then says that the recipient will find him in his bed very languid, but adds that whilst the flesh is weak the mind is quick and, above all, quick to feel the worth of the recipient.
