Autograph letter signed from Cosimo Alessandro Collini to Sébastien Dupont, written from Prangins and dated 24 January 1755.
Detailed Summary:
Collini begins by saying that he is angry that Dupont did not get the post he wanted (which was instead given to Jean-Joseph Barth on 3 January 1755), especially after Voltaire wrote in favour of him. He adds that, in this instance, bad prose won over verse, quoting the only two lines of an epistle by Voltaire to d’Argenson to survive: ‘Rendez, rendez heureux l’avocat qui m’engage / Donnez-lui les grandeurs d’un Prévôt de village’.
The paper is watermarked with indistinguishable text.

Additional Comments:
The MS was sealed using a variation of the ‘Tuck, Fold, and Seal’ method. The wax seal is partially extant on f.2v and has caused some damage to the same. There are two holes, one larger, one smaller running through the lower left-hand margin of both folios, and a small stain over the second word of l.5 on f.1r. A small amount of tape has been added to the upper right-hand corner of f.1r. There are several ink blots across the lower left-hand corner of f.2r.
The lines of verse have been underlined on f.1r. Two postmarks, one stamped and the other drawn in red pencil, have been added over the address on f.2v.
Passed at the ‘bibliophile voyageur’ [Leblanc] sale in Paris on 14 December 1843 (Lot. 1411), the comte *** [Hunolstein] sale hosted by Charavay in Paris on 3 February 1858 (Lot. 97), and the Dubrunfaut sale in Paris on 22 December 1884 (Lot. 158).
