Contemporary copy of a statement by Voltaire enclosed in a letter from him to Théodore Tronchin, dating to c.6 February 1759.
Detailed Summary:
The statement was prepared by Voltaire for Vernet to sign. The statement notes that Vernet disapproves of an anonymous brochure titled Guerre Littéraire, copies of which were seized by the Messieurs les Scorlarques. It is added that he is especially very angry to see his name featured in the brochure in several places. The statement concludes with a declaration that the brochure is false as he has never had the slightest problem with Voltaire, his neighbour, for whom he has the greatest respects, and from whom he has received only politeness.
The MS is bound with other letters in the collection in calf.
Additional Comments:
The MS was folded in half (since unfolded). There is some staining to the upper right-hand corner of f.350r and several small ink splatters throughout the text on the same. Some twine has been tied to the lower part of the central bifolium fold line.
A second hand has endorsed the MS as ‘No.44’ in the upper right-hand corner of f.351v. The title of a work mentioned in the letter, Guerre Litteraire, has been underlined.
