Comme je suis encore de mauvaise humeur, & que quand on est de mauvaise humeur il est bien difficile de causer avec les gens qu’on aime d’une manière qui leur plaise
Autograph copy of a letter from César de Missy to Voltaire, written from London and dated 14 February 1744.
Detailed Summary:
De Missy begins by saying that he was in a bad mood, and that bad moods make it difficult to talk with the people one loves in a way that pleases him. He notes that he was about to end his letter abruptly when his eyes fell on a passage in Voltaire’s last letter that made him laugh. He then turns to freedom of conscience and notes that he and Voltaire have very different views on that topic. De Missy ends with a Latin quote: Petimusque damusque vicissim (we ask and we give in turn).
Latin words and phrases have been underlined, and the second word of line 10 has been crossed out. F.168r is stamped with the library stamp of Louis-Nicolas-Jean-Joachim de Cayrol and the Bibliothèque Impériale.
