Autograph letter from Voltaire to Jean Robert Tronchin, written from Ferney and dated 21 March [1765]. The Linderman Library suggest that the recipient is [?] Fernier, however this results in a misreading of the address. The address reads: ‘a Monsieur Monsieur tronchin fermier géneral a paris’.
Detailed Summary:
Voltaire writes that Marie-Louis Denis [née Mignot] [née Mignot] consummated the Délices business with the recipient’s brother. He notes that a violent sore throat prevented him from being part of the meeting, but that he was not necessary. He adds that he asked his niece to do whatever the recipient’s brother wanted her to. He jokes that the recipient is now the owner of Les Délices, but remarks that he will never leave Paris to come to Geneva. Voltaire writes that he is always interested in the tranquility of the recipients’ homeland (France) and adds that he hopes Jean Jacques Rousseau will not disturb the peace.
F.2 is significantly damaged, with a large portion of the page lost. This loss does not affect the text. There are numerous dots of ink throughout. There are remnants of red wax above the address on f.2v.
