Brief Summary:

Autograph letter signed from Voltaire to Allen Bathurst, 1st Earl Bathurst, written from Paris and dated 18 October 1729.

Detailed Summary:

Voltaire begins by expressing his gratitude to Bathurst for the kindnesses he showed him whilst he was in London, noting in particular the freedom he was allowed in Bathurst’s house and the library at Richings. He then says that when he returned to Paris he lived in a remote suburb like a hermit, and so did not know that Bathurst’s son was also in Paris, noting that he was angry at having missed the chance to show the son how much he respected and was grateful to the father. Voltaire ends by saying that he hopes Lady Bathurst and the children are well.
