A manuscript copy of La Pucelle d’Orleans.

Detailed Summary:

From 1755, La Pucelle circulated clandestinely in the form of pirate editions and manuscript copies, before it was published in 1762. This is a manuscript copy of the text, illustrated with images that seem to have been copied from one of the clandestine copies.

Decorations:

The manuscript is illustrated with 18 plates, one at the head of each canto, seemingly copied from a clandestine copy. These illustrations were drawn in brown ink and coloured in gouache and watercolour. The text, calligraphed in brown and red ink, is framed by a double red net. The frontispiece is illustrated, including a portrait of Voltaire. There is a vignette at the head and large culs-de-lampe drawn with stencil ink wash, except for the last one drawn in ink and enhanced with pink wash.
