Autograph letter signed from Voltaire to Samuel von Marschall, baron von Marschall, dated ‘ce samedy’. The letter has been dated to 1751/52 but the baron von Marschall died in Berlin on 11 December 1749, so the letter must have been sent prior to this date.
Detailed Summary:
Voltaire writes that von Marschall had missed the comedy these past few days. He implores von Marschall to come after the queen mother’s [Königin Sophie Dorothea’s] supper and assures him that he will let him into the play as he needs viewers like him. The letter has been misdated to 1751/2. The recipient, Baron Samuel von Marschall, died in Berlin on 11 December 1749 so the letter must have been sent prior to this date.

Additional notes have been added by Voltaire’s editor Louis Nicolas Jean Joachim de Cayrol (1775-1859). An autographed note in Cayrol’s hand at the bottom of f.1r reads: ‘Je crois que le Billet autographe de voltaire a ete adressé en 1751 à Mr de Baron De Marschall.’
