The work was written in the mid-eighteenth century to celebrate the life and works of Voltaire.

The author of the letter offers their thoughts on a new comedy, ‘Le philosophe-soi-disant’, which was then performed in ‘our regions’. They make reference to Voltaire, calling him ‘Le philosophe de Genève’.

The notes include quotations from Voltaire, Cicero’s De officiis, Justinian’s Digesten, and Arnobius’ Contra gentes/Adversus nationes. They were likely compiled by Gijsbert Jan van Hardenbroek (1719-1788)
