This MS copy represents the final entry in a bound volume, falling after Samson and Eriphyle. The volume is collectively titled ‘Supplément aux œuvres de theatre de M. De Voltaire’ and forms part of the d’Argenson collection. The MS appears to be related to those sent by Lacombe to Voltaire in 1775, and may be their source.

Lekain has copied out the part of Vendôme and includes cues from the speeches of other actors. The text closely resembles the 1765 edition that Lekain himself played a key role in and it is likely that the manuscript copy was made from an edition produced under Voltaire’s control, such as the Nouveaux mélanges or the aforementioned edition.

The MS forms part of a collection of Voltaire texts prepared by Cideville under the instructions of Voltaire. A note in Cideville’s hand states that: ‘Ce recueil charmant m’a été envoyé par l’autheur au commenement de mars 1735’.

The MS is almost identical to a second copy of the work found in the same volume (CMV36657). Variants appear to have been taken from a later version of the work, likely the 1740 Paris edition, and have been added above the line and in the margins.

• A manuscript copy of Lettre de M. de V… à M. de C…, copied under the title of ‘Epître à Monsieur de ****’
• A manuscript copy of Le Temple de Goût

The volume appears to have been owned by Pierre Crozat, being marked D[ominus]. Crozat by Mariette who acquired the MS for the library.

The copy forms part of a collection of manuscript copies of Voltaire’s works.

The poem is titled ‘Vers de Mr Harouet, A Mr. Racine, sur son Poëme sur la grace’ and is dated 1722.

The copy is found in a recueil of diverse theatre parts taken from a number of plays. The plays all seem to have been performed at the Château de Berny, home of the comte de Clermont.
