The manuscript is an autograph letter that attests to a more frequent future correspondence with Voltaire after his loss of two good friends, presumably mme de Feriol, who died on the 2nd, and Maisons, to whose death Voltaire refers in D1006. The letter carries the references to Chubb and Voltaire’s Métaphysique (Questions sur l’Encyclopédie). According to T. D. N. Besterman, Caussy was in the wrong when he suggested that the manuscript carries the phrase ‘On the back of MS1 is a copy of some verses by Bernard’.

Voltaire begins with some poetry, before writing that he awaits a copy of Shaftesbury’s English theology (possibly a work by Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury), upon the arrival of which he will send a copy of another work to Capacelli. He then sends his compliments to Algaroti, adding that if a new play is performed at Tourney he will send a copy to the recipient in Bologna.

Du Châtelet thanks Thiériot for the trouble he has taken in order that she may have the finest house in Paris and notes that she has received an answer from the crown prince about her Essai sur le feu. She writes that she hopes to inspire him with a taste for physics and make him give up his mania for verse because ‘one can very well be a mediocre physicist, but it is not permitted to be a bad poet.’ Du Châtelet writes that since Thiériot left her, she has developed an interest in lawsuits and then turns to literary and artistic news, mentioning among others Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis, Francesco Algarotti, Roland Desalleurs, John Hervey, Jean-Henri Castéra, Jean-Nicolas Formont, and Jean-Philippe Rameau.
