Brief Summary:
Copy in Villaume’s hand of Voltaire’s edited version of D4195, in which Frederick assures Voltaire that he will be happy in Prussia. The copy contains several emendations in Voltaire’s hand, including, beneath the title, a summary of the letter: ‘Sur la quelle lettre le sr de Voltaire s’engagea au service de ce monarque apres que sa majesté prussienne l[‘]eut fait demander au roy de france par son ministre’. This version belongs to Voltaire’s 1754 project to create a version of a selection of his correspondence to tell the story of his stay in Prussia to posterity, a project that has come to be known under the title of Paméla.

A later editor has crossed out the title and Voltaire’s sub-title, and various numbers have been inscribed in the margins at the top of p.355. An editorial note in the right-hand margin of p.355, only partially legible due to the binding, reads (probably) ‘[apos]tille [de Vo]ltaire’.
