The MS was folded to create a left-hand margin on both the recto and verso sides. The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck-and-Seal’ method before sending. The wafer seal is extant on f.2v and has caused some damage to the same. There are two inkblots on f.2v. Ink from f.1v has transferred onto the left-hand side of f.2r.

Undecorated

Additions:

Parts of l.13-14 have been underlined. A third, unknown hand has added a provenance note to the top of f.1r reading: ‘reponse de Mr de Voltaire à la lettre précidente’. The MS has been endorsed as ’25’ in the upper left-hand corner of f.1r. Five post marks have been stamped around and over the address panel on f.2v.
