Contemporary copy of ‘Le Droit du seigneur’ with autograph corrections by Voltaire.
Detailed Summary:
Official approval of the MS has been recorded on p.107 in a note reading: ‘Lu et aprouvé les changemens. A Paris le 8 juin 1779. Suard. Vue l’aprobation, Permis de representer et d’imprimer ce 9 juin 1779. Lenoir.’
There is some staining to the paper cover/title page for Act I, which has also been torn and dog eared, and further staining to p.69. The paper has been folded throughout to create a left-hand margin on both the recto and verso sides. Drops of liquid have caused the ink to run on p.34-35. Stains to the upper left-hand corners of p.69 and p.89 appear to be remnants of a wafer seal, suggesting that additional paper may once have been appended to these pages. Pins have been left in the lower and upper left-hand corners of p.103.
There are several corrections throughout, the majority of which are in the hands of either Voltaire or Wagnière. These take the form of crossings out, crossings out with corrected text superscript, and the addition of omitted text superscript. Annotations and marginal notes have also been added throughout, such as one by Voltaire at the bottom of p.43. A scrap of paper has been stuck over existing text on p.27, providing alternative lines of text. A new page of text has been affixed over an existing one on p.101. Crosses have been drawn in the left-hand margin beside this addition. A further half page has been affixed to the lower portion of p.102. Much of the upper part of p.44 and the entirely of p.155 have been crossed through. There is a pen trial in the left-hand margin of p.47. Act I has been endorsed as ‘copie originale’ by Wagnière.
