Letter from Voltaire to Charles-Joseph Panckoucke, written from château de Ferney and dated 29 September 1769.
Detailed Summary:
The writer strongly supports the plan to supplement the Encyclopédie, hoping it will correct outdated errors. Frustrated by the proposed pay, he refuses to take part unless terms are improved. He offers to contribute articles – health permitting – but warns that he will disavow any misattributed or poorly edited work. He also dismisses the idea of an Italian revising the French Encyclopédie with Swiss help, noting his unfamiliarity with the project.
This MS was probably taken to St Petersburg by Wagnière in the summer of 1779 along with the rest of Voltaire’s library.
