The paper is watermarked with a shield bearing a post horn, topped with a crown. Beneath the shield are the initials ‘GR’.

Additional Comments:
The letter was sealed using the ‘Tuck-and-Seal’ method. The wax seal is no longer extant but has caused some damage to f.2, possibly resulting in the loss of Voltaire’s signature. There is further tearing to the right-hand side of f.1. The paper has also been folded to create a left-hand margin on both the recto and verso sides. There is an ink blot between l.6 and l.7 of f.1r, and to the right of the address on f.2v.
